Well, it got me thinking, October really is a great month- and I have been getting super excited about fall. I started making a mental list of things to do this fall, and decided to make a "things to do in October" list- and try to make through most if not all of them. That way I can't sit around on my days off & think, what should I do? And, if I can inspire you to try something new, that's always a plus too :)
Things to Do in October
(listed by date)
-American Pharmacists Month- say thank you to your local pharmacist next time you pick up your prescription! Not to brag, but we're pretty awesome.
-Celebrate Oktoberfest! Grab a brew of some sort, or try out one named after the festivities
- National Frappe Day- while most people are gearing up for pumpkin spice lattes, support your local McDonald's & treat yourself to a frappe. Or if you're a snob & NEED Starbucks, get a frappuccino, which is basically the same. If you end up at Starbucks, do yourself a favor & order the Java Chip Frappuccino though, my fave thing on the menu.
- Do something nice today. Whether it's a smile, opening a door for someone, or picking up trash blowing across the parking lot
- International Frugal Fun Day- who says you need to have money to have fun? There are PLENTY of ideas for cheap activities- this list was found from a popular blog often featured on pinterest. One of my favorite frugal fun activities? Having a game night! Even if you only have a deck of cards, google a new card game to learn, or sit down for some monopoly or Quelf.
-R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A. & celebrate John Cougar Mellencamp's Birthday today! Listen to Pink Houses, Cherry Bomb, Jack & Diane, I Need a Lover, Lonely Ol Night, & Hurts So Good- or pull up "John Mellencamp Radio" on Satellite radio or Pandora
-Columbus Day- take a minute to thank Chris C for sailing the ocean blue back in 1492, or we may not be here today!
-Rock of Ages- the movie- comes out on DVD! Reserve it on RedBox, at Family Video, Netflix, etc & get ready to rock to the 80's music featured!
- Week 2 of October is celebrated as "Pet Peeve Week"- so release that built-up frustration & write down your biggest pet peeves. This may also make for great work break room conversation
-You know what I love? When I am running late for work, and I hurriedly slam my pants leg in my car door, then get to work & realize my water bottle leaked all over my purse, then show up to the pharmacy and already have 5 people waiting in line at 8:45 for me to open at 9. Just kidding. But what I do love is sarcasm, & October is National Sarcasm Month
-Have a bonfire! I love dressing in sweats, sitting close to the fire, relaxing & roasting marshmallows. Especially in October, when you actually want to sit right up to the fire unlike July, when the air is still 82. Invite the neighbors over & make it a party!
- Take advantage of a crisp fall morning & head down to the local farmer's market. The weather may not be as nice as summer, and the selection
- Tailgate! My favorite team, the Packers, are playing in Houston today, but who says I can't still tailgate & eat all sorts of yummy gameday & grilled food!
-Get your flu shot! The flu is nothing to mess with, and if you can prevent it, why not get a simple shot?!? Hate shots? Get your vaccine via nasal spray! Flu season typically starts in early October, so get vaccinated now to ensure you're protected. You may be a doubter saying, well it doesn't cover EVERY strain of flu, why waste my time/money, or maybe "I've never gotten sick before, why would it happen now?". The way I see it, better safe than sorry. And, to avoid a doctor's visit- stop in your local pharmacy :) Many pharmacists are qualified to give vaccinations, including flu shots!
-Bosses Day- say thanks to the big man (or woman). Even if you aren't their biggest fan, they keep you employed AND who doesn't like to be appreciated? Say a simple thanks, or really kiss up & bring in treats or a thank-you card.
- Do some work, have some fun- get outside & rake some leaves into a huge pile- then jump in them! have a leaf fight! be a kid again!
-Breast Cancer Awareness month- do something to honor those who have been affected by breast cancer. Participate in a Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, donate a few bucks to the cause, buy pink NFL breast cancer awareness gear for your favorite team, learn some breast cancer facts, or remember a loved one who was affected.
-Go to a hockey game! With baseball season coming to a close, it's time for some hockey- our local Des Moines Bucs started up a couple weeks ago and you can't beat enjoying some ice, concession stands, and fighting.
-Happy Sweetest Day! The Valentine's Day for fall! Tell your sweetie you love them, or at least show a little extra appreciation to ALL those you love.
-Visit a local pumpkin patch- have fun finding that perfect pumpkin, pose for some photo ops, then go home & get carving! (get pumpkin decor ideas here)
-It's a Monday...and who wants to cook after a long day of work? Prepare on Sunday to bust out your crockpot & start something cooking on Monday morning before you leave for work! Come home to a yummy smelling house & dinner cooked for you. Try some of the recipes on this website or this one or this one!!!!!
-Go for a run outdoors- before the snow comes & makes sidewalks slick, get outside, enjoy any remaining fall colors, or even register to do a 5k. Wanna know if there are any upcoming races in your area? Visit Runner's World Race Finder, or Active 's listings.
-Get spooked at a local Haunted House!!! Bring a friend though that you don't mind being close to ;)
-TWO MONTHS until Christmas! Be prepared for once and buy a present for someone today. Think of something perfect for someone on your shopping list & buy it now. Not only will it help save some stress of last-minute shopping, but it helps the wallet too when you spread out the spending over a couple months rather than a couple days.
-Enjoy a hay ride! I have memories of visiting my Great Aunt/Uncle's farm as a kid & going on a hay ride around their property. Granted, it was tractor-pulled rather than horse-pulled, but either is a fun way to relax with friends & family in the fall.
-USA Today's "Make a Difference Day"- I am always hooked to reading the stories of projects people of ALL ages have done to make a difference. Join a a group and aid in their project, or think of that one volunteer project you've always wanted to do, and actually do it this year! Every little bit helps.
-National Mother-In-Law Day (4th Sunday in October)- who knew there was a special MIL day?! Sure, they deserve a day to be honored (ok, maybe some people may not agree with me)- but even a quick "thanks for raising your son/daughter" or "I made your recipe for lasagna the other night, it was fantastic" can make them feel good.
-Try a new restaurant or cuisine- you know that eclectic, small restaurant on the corner you drive by every day? stop in for a meal! Always wondered what Peruvian food tastes like? Put on your brave pants & go in for lunch. You never know until you try! Find a place using a cool new app too :)
-Trick or treat! Go on the hunt for a sugar high on what many cities celebrate as Beggars Night. Stock up on candy in case some cuties come knocking on your door. Or stock up on candy just because you love candy.
-Happy Halloween!!! Get dressed up in a costume, or just go to WalMart & people watch (just kidding!). I have to admit, I LOVE seeing kids all dressed up- the little baby costumes are the CUTEST things. And while I'll reserve myself from dressing up Jethro, some of those doggy costumes are adorable too- at Target today we noticed the "Wide Retriever" jerseys, so cute.
Hope that gives you at least ONE thing to try out this October. No kids sitting around saying "I'm bored"...the fall provides much fun if one just looks around.
